ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The landscape of publishing has undergone a massive transformation. Once a convoluted, confusing process, the advent of e-books and on-demand printing has created an unprecedented freedom in the industry. The dream of becoming a published author is now more accessible than ever—and more challenging.
In this workshop, we’ll define those challenges and explore methods with which to face them. Students will be guided through the process of publishing a book on their own: we’ll explore software like Scrivener and Calibre, review options for distributing both hardcopies and ebooks, and talk about how to manage it all on an affordable budget.
If you’ve ever looked at a completed manuscript and found yourself wondering what to do next, this is the workshop for you.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Alex Penland was a museum kid. The daughter of a photographer and a Scuba diver, she spent her teenage years in the field: Penland has worked with Smithsonian archaeologists, NASA software engineers, volcanologists, and photographers. She also managed to fail Algebra II with a passing grade, which she's a little proud of.
Much of her work is both a love letter to and an intense criticism of the academic world.
She has been bitten by a shark, she watched the final shuttle launch from the fire escape outside Launch Control, and she has been a certified diver since age twelve. She likes dogs, long walks on the beach, and socialized medicine. Also books.
Penland is one of two Directors of The Writers' Rooms, an editor for hire, an amateur linguist, and a Taurus. Her work has received many accolades, including an Honorable Mention in the Writer's Digest Annual Contest 2017.

I’m convinced that writing is literal magic.
The written word allows us to speak with those long gone, learn from the greatest minds in the world, and record our voices for decades to come. Writing lets us see into the past, whether we’re looking at the epic poetry of the ancients or our own childhood diaries. Writing lets us peer into the future, imagine what’s to come. Writing shows us the present, letting us reimagine our lives from different angles.
We authors are wizards, casting spells to illuminate the world around us in three tenses, past, present, and future.
