ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
In this unique mash-up, acclaimed author and famed pie maker, Beth M. Howard, will incorporate a pie class into the writing workshop as a way to encourage students to face and overcome their fears, let go of perfection, and gain the confidence to share what they’ve created. “Pie is a metaphor,” says Howard, a memoirist and essayist known for her deeply personal storytelling. As her experience of living and writing in the American Gothic house gained a national following, her book, Making Piece, won hearts across the country. “Pie is like life," says Howard. "It isn’t perfect, and it is meant to be shared.”
In this workshop, students will create both their own rich, enticing essays, as well as fruity, flaky pastries. Writers of all levels can learn from Beth's signature style in both storytelling and the kitchen. Participants will come away infused with courage to tell their stories, new writing, and of course with their very own American pie.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Beth M. Howard is the author of “Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Pie” and “Ms. American Pie: Buttery Good Pie Recipes and Bold Tales from the American Gothic House.” Her most recent book is “Hausfrau Honeymoon: Love, Language and Other Misadventures in Germany.” She has written for The New York Times, Real Simple, and Country Living among many other publications. She has been a TEDx speaker and is a commentator for Tri-States Public Radio. From 2010 to 2014, she lived in the iconic American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, where she ran the Pitchfork Pie Stand. Her story has garnered international media attention including CNN Anderson Cooper 360, CBS This Morning, BBC, NPR, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post and more.
